What To Do If You Get Sick: 2009 H1N1 and Seasonal Flu

Before reading about the H1N1 Flu article, also known as the Swine Flu, I knew that this type of strain creeps up very fast on people and could even make someone very sick to the point of hospitalization or even death in a matter of days. I began to read more on this article and it was talking about three main things. Who's more at risk, the symptoms, and how to treat the H1N1 "Swine" Flu.

1. Those most at risk are; Children five and under, people with AIDS, diabetes, asthma, ETC. 2. Symptoms that are warning signs that indicate you needing to go to the Emergency Room are; difficulty breathing, pain or pressure in the chest, sudden dizziness, confusion, severe vomiting, ETC. 3. How to treat the Swine Flu; Get the H1N1 Flu Shot and stay home for one whole day so you do not contaminate others.

Although, I'm not one of those at high risk with the H1N1 flu, anything is possible. Especially commuting 4 days a week to N.Y.C.

Indoor Air Pollution

Before I read this I knew a little bit but not too much of indoor air pollution. I knew about how house cleaning send off horrible chemicals for people. What I learned was indoor pollution can be more harmful than people realize and its sort of a big killer. What I still want to know is there anyway of cutting this indoor pollution down? I’m sure Al Gore must have the answer!!! Am I right?

Tattoo's and Piercing

Before I read this article I knew that tattoos and piercing has been around for ages now, but it’s been getting more popular these days. A lot of people have been getting tattoos and/or body piercing not because of their culture, but because of their own enjoyment or self expression for body work. I would love to get some tattoos one day but that’s for a different conversation. I also knew that getting body work done could potently cause health risks and problems. Oh, and if you’re Jewish and you’re very into Judaism but have a tattoo, you cannot be buried with your family when you die.

What I learned were people that get tattoos or some type of body piercing cannot donate blood for a year. Which I think is kind of funny because I know a lot of people with tattoos and piercing and not once did I ever hear someone mention about how they couldn’t donate blood due to getting work done.

What I still want to know is, where does getting tattoos hurt the most and if a certain area can get more infected than another area on the body?

Orlando Magic Rashard Lewis, Suspended 10 games.

Before reading this story I only knew that Orlando Magic Rashard lewis got a 10 game suspension for violating the leagues drug policy but I did not know the whole story behind his suspension.
NBA star foward Rashard Lewis of the Orlando Magic, will not be playing/receiving salary the first 10 games of the NBA regular season due to a suspension he received back last month from a failed drug test. It was a performance-enhancing drug which sources said was DHEA. He released a statement right after the suspension, saying: "First and foremost I take full responsibility for the situation and accept the corresponding penalty," Lewis said. "I apologize to Magic fans, my teammates and this organization for not doing the research that should come with good judgment."

After reading this story my views changed on Mr. Lewis but he's human and makes mistakes like all of us. My hope for the future is that more professional athletes maintain more integrity for their game and foremost for their health.

College Advice for Incoming Freshman

I could relate to most of the advice given to me from the few pieces of paper that Professor Westry handed out last week. Reading that plus some of my own personal experiences I’m ready to give my advice for the upcoming freshman.

- Don’t get too stressed out on in first couple of weeks. College is a fun, big new experience in your life and you should have fun and get to know the people in and around your school in the first week so you have friends right off the bat. If you’re going to stress out, you should stress when the Final exams come!

- Make friends with your professors.

- Get involved with school activities.

- Take advantage of every learning opportunity you can get.

- If you know upperclassmen ask them about good professors because learning is no fun at all with a horrible professor. This will make college way easier if you do so.

- Make sure you stay positive.

- Don’t get upset because you’re taking a class you don’t want to take and/or have a hard time with the subject. There’s people around to help you with certain subjects at the school and the possilities should be endless for learning.

- Be respectful to your Professors and classmates.

- Don’t make your schedule too late, especially if you’re a commuter and it takes you more than an hour to get to school. If classes fill-up, you could wind up with a class at 11 a.m. then your next class at 5 p.m. There is a positive side to this though. If this happens go to the library and do homework or hangout with friends on campus so you don’t have to waste your time and money coming back and forth.

Dangers While Texting

What I know before reading about this texting article, is that texting is a very bad idea, if you’re driving, walking, ect. Texting is pretty much a way of life now for everyone in their teens and 20's even 30's. I text a lot but it doesn't affect anything I ever do because I'm so use to it. If I have to walk across a street I stop texting because I feel its common sense. I would like to know what the author considers is a better alternative for communication; however, the author does not offer this. What I learned is that even doctors text in not that right situations.
